Whether
it is a grocery store, corner store, vending machine, or gas
station there is more candy and confections than ever
before! We are simply inundated with so many different
sweets, it is a wonder sometimes that we actually do eat
good healthy food occasionally. What was in the 19th century
a rare treat to have a wonderful piece of confection, in the
mid 20th century perhaps something that you were lucky to
get once a month or once a week, now is a daily staple it
seems.
This is
easy to see when we walk into a mall, grocery chain, corner
store or almost any other place. Right in front in the most
prominent place in the store is the shelf upon shelf of
treats, in wonderfully colored packages, and the taste is
well, fantastic. Is it good for you? Occasionally a
chocolate bar or treat is nice, but occasionally is usually
more like daily or hourly, for me, at one time.
So are
we addicted to candy or is just simply it's prominence and
excellent marketing placed it so well in our minds, that we
cannot do without that sugar fix? In the 1950's if there was
money left over after buying groceries
or if you were lucky enough to have a few extra pennies, one
could indulge in a fine treat on a rare occasion.
In the
21st century we can afford and most people buy confections,
every day, many of us multiple times per day. So what does
that do to our health, and bodies? You do not have to look
far in western societies to see the results. They are all
around you, and the companies who manufacture these products
know their market (me and you!) The come up with the most
wonderful combinations of ingredients and textures to keep
everyone satisfied again and again.
