The way in which we go about day to day life is much different than our ancestors, however even our parents had a very different lifestyle than ourselves. No longer are we hunters and gatherers. No longer are we required even to leave our house, other than for work and the occasional grocery run.

Many of us have become addicted to the devices which serve us. Surround sound multi channel entertainment systems within our own homes mean we do not have to go out to the movie theatres ever again. Game stations, and extremely realistic and addictive electronic games take us to impossible fantasy worlds, and keep us and our children stationary and entertained for hours and hours and hours! Our computers have moved from simply electronic tools to multimedia entertainment devices, where not only do many of us work, but when we get home, can surf the internet, email, get information, and all to often spend endless hours chatting to others on chat websites or web forums.

Add all of this up and as human beings we don't really need to do much at all. Our food can be delivered from a quick phone call, and before you realize it, outside of work the furthest distance that we walk each day consists of a number of trips to the refrigerator, bathroom, television, computer, and game station. A simple act of carrying the garbage to the curb has become an enormous chore, and if it wasn't for the bad smell, a lot of us would choose not to get off of our butts and even do that!

How do we get out of this sedentary lifestyle?

  1. Limit the time for yourself, your children at ANY entertainment device which requires no physical movement.
  2. Plan simple activities within your neighborhood which require that you get off your butt and move i.e.: Walk to the store instead of drive. Walk around your neighborhood after dinner. Get a un-powered lawnmower cut the grass!
  3. Get a hobby which requires physical movement. I.e.: building something in the yard. Sports with friends at a given time. Activities every weekend.
  4. Join a  local community center group, church group, sports club, car club, dance club, etc. Give yourself a reason to go out, and if it has a specific time each day, or week all the better.
  5. Be innovative, once you get going again, you will realize just how much that you have been missing!

It's up to you to get moving, and remember you will also be setting an example for those around you including your children!
